From a demand perspective, not only are risk-averse investors turning to gold, but central banks are as well. According to data released by the World Gold Council, nations around the world are gobbling up gold in an attempt to decrease risk and mitigate the effects of a country’s economic policies.

Russia appears to be the largest buyer of gold among all central banks, purchasing nearly 26.6 metric tonnes of the metal in the first quarter of 2010. After Russia, the Philippines reportedly purchased 9.6 tonnes earlier this year in an attempt to support its local industry and hedge against inflationary pressures.

The third major buyer of the precious metal is Kazakhstan, which reportedly has purchased 3.1 tonnes in the first quarter of the year. Not only does gold enable these nations to diversify their wealth by spreading risk, but it also bolsters their global creditworthiness.

Although India and China have not made any significant gold purchases in 2010, they are still considered major buyers of gold. In November 2009, India increased its gold reserves by 55 percent through the purchase of 200 tonnes of the metal from the International Monetary Fund.

As for China, it is the world’s largest producer of gold and often buys from its own mines, not publicly reporting the purchases. With this in mind, the nation could potentially be the world’s largest buyer of gold. One thing is for sure, China is a major buyer and holder of gold and has admitted to significantly increasing its gold holdings over the last seven years.

The appeal of gold, both from an investor’s perspective and from a central bank’s will likely remain prevalent as fear continues to loom over the overall strength of the global markets and safe haven assets are sought after.

There are several reasons to own silver in addition to gold.

First, it’s cheaper! Known as the poor man’s gold, those with limited budgets will find it easier to purchase. You might hesitate plunking down $1,200 for an ounce of gold, but you can pick up 32 ounces of silver for half that amount.

Second, silver has wide industrial use and this component can help or hinder its price. As its consumption increases across a growing number of industries, this should help place a floor under demand. And because of its unique properties, new uses continue to be discovered.

Third, silver is money and has served this role more than any other material on earth, save gold. Due to its historical role, silver will always have monetary value and offer similar protection as gold to the ongoing global currency devaluations, and will definitely benefit from the inflation hurricane we see as inevitable.

Silver is more practical as a currency used for everyday purchases. When the time comes, you can sell the requisite number of silver coins to cover a specific need, as opposed to being forced to liquidate a high-dollar-value gold holding. Silver is perfect when smaller amounts of cash are required.

Fourth and last, silver could possibly outperform gold before this bull market is over. Themarket capitalization of silver (and silver stocks) is much smaller, making its price more susceptible to demand spikes than gold.

Caution – Hot!

Like all things, silver has its drawbacks, two in particular.

►Make price volatility your friend. Big price swings present the opportunity to snag silver at a big discount. We give some guidance on prices below.

Second is the storage issue. As your pile grows, the advantage to storing gold will become self-evident. At $1,200 gold and $18.50 silver, $10,000 will get you eight gold eagles that will fit nicely in the credit card slots of your wallet; however, it will buy 540 silver eagles, weigh nearly 34 pounds, and fill a small bank safe deposit box.

►How to store physical silver. There are several ways to solve the storage dilemma, even if you plan to buy like the Hunt brothers.

Spread your holdings around. Not only is it wise to avoid keeping all your physical silver in one place, diversifying your storage arrangements allows you to buy more. Hide some at home in several locations (no cookie jars, though), and obviously tell only one trusted person. Store some in a bank safe deposit box and use more than one bank as your holdings grow.
Buy bars. Silver bars take up less space than a pile of coins of the same weight. We wouldn’t start out with nor have all our holdings in bars, because you want the advantage coins offer. But the larger your holdings, the easier it will be to store some of it in bar form.
Use pool accounts and unallocated storage. With a pool or unallocated account, you’re essentially getting free storage no matter how big your stash. That’s hard to beat. You’ll pay fabrication and delivery charges if/when you convert your holdings and take delivery, but in the meantime, you save on storage costs. Great value for the large holder.
Private storage. Store your silver with a private vaulting company. The advantage is that it’s outside the banking system; the disadvantage is that it’s usually expensive, though it can be cost effective for large holdings. Do your own due diligence if you go this route because we can’t vouch for any facility, but you could start by checkingout delawaredepository.com. Dow Dips Again And Gold Edges Closer To Record

Stocks fell to seven-month lows today, and gold neared a new high as worries about the European debt crisis pushed the euro to new four-year lows. Technology share were also quite weak.

The Dow Jones industrials ($INDU) were off 115 points, or 1.2% to 9,816 after tumbling 323 points on Friday. The Nasdaq Composite Index ($COMPX) had lost 45 points, 2%, to 2,174, and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index ($INX) was down 14 points, 1.4%, to 1,050.

Gold closed at $1,240.80, just below its record $1,242.70 set on May 12. But crude oil was off 7 cents to $71.44. Natural gas rose 11.9 cents to $4.916 per million British thermal units. Gas is up 13.3% this month.

The falling euro (which also means a rising dollar) was a big problem, hurting multinational companies, such as United Technologies (UTX), Caterpillar (CAT) and Boeing (BA).

At the same time, tech stocks fell back as investors worried that intense competition among smart-phone makers would hit profits.
Apple (AAPL) was down 1.8% to $251.34 as investors worried that it faces intense competition from devices based on Google's (GOOG) Android operating system.

The downturn came despite some relief about BP's (BP) effort to stanch the leaking oil in the Gulf of Mexico, which was not enough to stem lingering concerns about Friday's disappointing May nonfarm payrolls report and the European debt crisis.

The euro fell to $1.194 against the dollar. The euro fell below the key level of $1.20 on Friday for the first time since March 2006.

With today's close, the Dow is off 12.4% from its April 26 high, with the S&P 500 off 13.7% and the Nasdaq down 14.1%. Today was the 21st session in 32 where the Dow gained or fell more than 100 points.

The question traders are trying to figure out is whether a bottom is near. The key indicator to watch is whether the S&P 500 will hold at 1,040, which is part of a long-term trend line in place since July 2009.

FCIC subpoenas Goldman
Goldman Sachs (GS) was off 2.5% to $138.46 after the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission issued a subpoena to the banking giant, saying the bank failed to comply with a request for documents and interviews in a timely manner.
The FCIC is examining the financial crisis that shook the economy in 2008 and is scheduled to issue a report with recommendations by the end of the year.

Disclosure concerns have followed Goldman in recent months. It has been criticized for not immediately telling investors that it received a so-called Wells Notice from the SEC last September, signaling the possibility of civil charges.

Hungary insists it's responsible
Hungary tried to defuse jitters about its economic situation this morning, with Prime Minister Viktor Orban's chief of staff saying the country was taking steps to rein in its budget deficit. "What we have decided is that we will do everything to be able to follow the planned deficit path," Mihaly Varga said.

The country's Cabinet is holding emergency meetings on how to meet its budget goals, and the government could impose a tax on bank profits, as well as a change to a flat income tax, Varga said.

Worries about Europe's debt crisis were exacerbated on Friday after Hungary said its economy is facing a "very grave" situation.

Palladium Making Gold Waves

Palladium may not have the mystique of gold but it's gaining exposure as a fundamental industrial metal for automobile catalytic converters, as an investment instrument, as jewelry and now as one of the key elements in a popular science fiction movie.

As a metal, palladium has to compete with gold, silver, platinum and rhodium on several fronts, but its proponents feel it is making progress.

North American Palladium LTD of Toronto, Canada, operates one of only two primary palladium mines in the world. Jeff Swinoga, the company's Chief Financial Officer and Vice President-Finance, was one of the presenters at the 10th Metals and Mining Industry Conference sponsored by the New York Society of Security Analysts on Wednesday. NAP operates Lac Des Iles (LDI) palladium mine in Ontario, Canada and has the Sleeping Giant Gold Mine in Quebec. LDI has been producing palladium since 1993 and is one of only two primary palladium mines in the world.

Palladium is used in automobile catalytic converters, along with platinum and rhodium; and has become popular in recent years for jewelry, Swinoga said in an interview with Kitco News on the sidelines of the NSSA conference. It's less expensive than platinum, thus one of its good points. There is only 6 million ounces of annual global palladium production, with 45 percent coming from Russia, 41 percent from South Africa and 11 percent from North America, Swinoga said, citing figures from the CPM group.

In the current environment, production growth in both South Africa and Russia is uncertain, Swinoga said. The best way to increase production, he said, is through higher prices.

Gold posted its highest close in two weeks, edging closer to the $1,300 per ounce mark as investors fled to the safe haven as geopolitical unrest and a falling euro had investors shunning risk, painting a prosperous road for the future of the precious metal.

Concerns in the Euro Zone continue to widen as Spain’s debt has been the latest to witness a downgrade. Ratings agency, Fitch, downgraded the nation’s debt from an AAA to AA. A further blow came to Europe when the European Central Bank announced that euro-zone banks may have to write off loans totaling $240 billion this year and next, which could result in tighter credit markets and slower economic growth. Additionally, rumors have been floating that France’s debt rating will be the next downgrade in the region, resulting in yet another blow to a fragile region. The last force that is adding to the uncertainty in Europe comes from the resignation of Germany’s President, Horst Koehler.

On the geopolitical forefront, tensions between South Korea and North Korea and the recent Israeli attacks on the flotilla of aid relief ships, which broke a blockade to bring supplies to Gaza continue to provide price support. This ramp up in global violence aided in the precious metals gains, as its appeal as a hedge against a financial and military crisis continues to glimmer.

In addition to the aforementioned, gold will likely witness further price support from concerns of sustainable global economic growth. In China, the Chinese Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI: 4.08 0.00 0.00%) read 53.9 in May, well below expectations ; indicating that China’s policies to slowdown its credit fueled economic growth is working and could potentially hinder the chance for tighter monetary policy going forward. In India, water scarcity could potentially hinder economic growth. In the US, unemployment levels continue to remain elevated, companies remain reluctant to hire full-time employees and the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico could potentially impact energy prices and the country’s overall economic growth.

In a nutshell, as long as financial uncertainty prevails, geopolitical tensions arise and potential threats which could hinder global economic growth are present, gold is likely to continue to see positive price support.
